Welcome to another edition of Small Shop Spotlight! Today I’ll be sharing a woman owned business that creates handcrafted candles with scents inspired from unique and exotic ingredients. Scrumptious Wicks offers an incredible array of hand-poured candles, all made with soy wax and cotton-braided wicks, allowing them to burn longer and cleaner!
You can see past Small Shop Spotlights here!
Sonya, the founder of Scrumptious Wicks was so kind to send me a few of her handcrafted candles and I am OBSESSED! She sent over the scents: Hazelnut Coffee, Blood Orange, Nag Champa, and Lemongrass. You can see the entire catalog of scents here!
Scrumptious Wicks offers several sizes, perfect for those who want to test run a scent, those who want a huge jar of divine goodness and a size for those in between! Starting at $7, the smallest size is a 4oz tin, the next size is a 8oz mason jar for $13 and largest size is a 16oz mason jar for $19!
I can 100% say these smell incredible – it’s impossible to choose a favorite! I’m a huge fan of Scrumptious Wicks not only because of my passion for independent businesses but also because these are made with soy wax which burn cleaner and longer.
I’m so honored to be posting this interview with Sonya, especially on Scrumptious Wick’s one year anniversary!! They even have a coupon code available, use code ONEYEAR to receive 10% off all orders this weekend!
Let’s get right on to the interview and learn more about Scrumptious Wicks from Sonya herself!
Tell us a bit about yourself!
My name is Sonya, and I am an Eye Doctor by day and an Entrepreneur by night!
What made you want to create your own brand?
My husband and I like to listen to a podcast on NPR called “How I Built This.” We were on a long drive home from the Poconos one day, and we were listening to the episode about Sara Blakely and how she came up with the idea for SPANX in her own home. Even though the idea seemed a little crazy at the time, she believed in herself and her potential. What struck me most about her story, though, is that she was keeping this idea a complete secret. She didn’t tell a SINGLE soul in the beginning! And that really resonated with me because I’ve always felt that believing in yourself and your potential FIRST is so important to be successful. Sure, the support from loving family and friends will follow, but that initial step to greatness always starts with yourself. And after listening to that podcast, I was inspired to create something fun and unique that I could share with people.
Is there a special meaning behind your brand name?
When I was naming my company, I knew I definitely wanted the word “Wicks” in it rather than “XYZ Candle Company.” I felt like it had more of a unique edge to it. Also, all of my family and friends know that I love to cook. In fact, my personal instagram is filled with pictures of my most recent concoctions. So naturally, a lot of my inspiration for candle scents would come from food ingredients like Lemongrass and Blood Orange. Soon enough the name “Scrumptious Wicks” came to me and the rest is history!
When did your company first launch and with what product?
I launched about one year ago in April 2017 with a few of my 4 oz tins and Mason Jars. I still can’t believe the company is almost a year old!
What products do you currently offer and do you have a favorite?
I offer my Classics Collection, which are made with all natural soy wax and poured into 4 oz tins or 8 oz and 16 oz Mason Jars. I also recently launched my LUXE Collection which features gorgeous home decor pieces with metallic and geometric accents on these jars. The LUXE collection is made with a proprietary soy and coconut wax blend and luxurious scents like Cashmere Petals, Jasmine Flower, Beachside Spa, and Egyptian Amber.
Are there any special items in the works right now? *wink wink* *nudge nudge*
I will be expanding into Reed Diffusers and Room Sprays soon! Stay tuned!
What is your best selling product and did you expect it to be a best seller? Or had you thought that spot would be taken by another product?
My best seller is Fruit Loops, hands down. Blood Orange was the best seller before Fruit Loops launched, but it still does really well year-round. It’s got that citrusy, fresh, and slightly sweet scent that is just absolutely addicting!
What’s the biggest challenge you faced starting your own business?
I think the biggest challenge was figuring out how to fulfill and ship orders while also being the Customer Service representative, the PR and Social Media representative, the Web Designer, and everything else in between. It’s taken a lot of time management to be successful doing this, but it’s all been worth it.
If you had to name three positive outcomes that came from creating your own brand, what would those be?
- Believing in myself like I never have before
- Learning how to successfully prioritize day-to-day tasks and balancing my Optometry life and my Business life
- Finding out who my biggest supporters are … and those who aren’t!
Last but not least, what would you say is your biggest achievement to date with your brand?
My biggest achievement has been empowering other women to turn their dreams into their own realities. Hard work always pays off, and if you’re willing to go in for the long haul, you can reap the benefits too.
Sonya’s story behind Scrumptious Wicks inspires me to continue on and chase my dreams! I don’t know about you all but I cannot wait for the Scrumptious Wicks Reed Diffusers and Room Sprays to launch!
